About the Journey

This course is ideal for backpacking guides, camp staff, outdoor educators, trip leaders, and anyone who would like to be more knowledgeable and safe in the backcountry.

To learn more about our Wilderness First Responder courses and future offerings, visit the WFR Course Overview Page.

The Wilderness First Responder course will be taught by a certified third-party instructor contracted by Lech-Lecha. Lech-Lecha staff will provide overall program coordination, participant support, and logistical oversight throughout the course.

We will invite participants to assist with routine camp tasks such as meal preparation and campsite setup as part of the communal nature of the program.

Lech-Lecha is excited to partner with Nathan Duclos, certified SOLO WFR instructor. Nathan has led expeditions in Argentina, Nepal, Iceland, Peru, the Alps, Mongolia, Alaska and beyond. He is a Wilderness Paramedic and licensed EMS instructor; he teaches wilderness medicine classes domestically and around the world.

We are hosting the course at the AMC Mohican Center. It's a gorgeous property with a swimmable lake, indoor and outdoor areas, and beautiful forests. It is about 1.5 hours from NYC.

We will be camping on the property.

The immersive in-person course will take place Aug 30 - Sep. 1, 2026 (Sunday–Tuesday).

You will have to complete a 15 hour online course before the beginning of the in-person course.

  • Sunday – full training day beginning at 9am

  • Monday – full training day

  • Tuesday – half day ending at 12pm

Participants must also complete one additional day of online coursework after the completion of the in-person course required for certification.

Because Lech-Lecha is a nonprofit organization, we run our WFR courses at cost.

Participants pay the instructor directly for the certification portion of the course, while Lech-Lecha only charges what is necessary to cover food, lodging, and logistical costs.

    • $100 – online segment

    • $450 – in-person training

  2. Lech-Lecha Trip Costs (paid upon registration)

    In person cost: $250

This covers food, lodging, gear, and logistical costs.

All prices above reflect the early-bird discount. Afterwards, prices increase by $50.

Scholarships are available to those who need them.
